An Ecological Perspective on the Deployment and Design of Low- Crested and Other Hard Coastal Defence Structures

چکیده

Coastal areas play a crucial role in the economical, social and political development of most countries; they support diverse and productive coastal ecosystems that provide valuable goods and services. Globally flooding and coastal erosion represent serious threats along many coastlines, and will become more serious as a consequence of human-induced changes and accelerated sea-level rise. Over the past century, hard coastal defence structures have become ubiquitous features of coastal landscapes as a response to these threats. The proliferation of defence works can affect over half of the natural shoreline in some regions and results in dramatic changes to the coastal environment. Surprisingly little attention has been paid to the ecological consequences of coastal defence. Results from the DELOS

A systematic and meta-analysis review of heavy metals pollution, toxicity potential, ecological and biological risk in surface sediments of Mahshahr and Imam Khomeini port estuaries (Coastal areas of Khuzestan province)

Coastal areas including the estuaries of Persian Gulf are sensitive and fragile areas of aquatic ecosystems in Iran that are severely affected by pollution from urbanization, industrialization, and maritime activity. Despite numerous studies on the status of pollution, especially heavy metals in these areas, comprehensive and systematic studies on this subject have not been conducted. Therefore...

The influence of engineering design considerations on species recruitment and succession on coastal defence structures

Engineering design considerations of artificial coastal structures were tested to resemble as far as possible the nearest natural equivalent habitat, ecologically valuable rocky shores, as a potential management option. Coastal areas around the world attract urbanisation but these transitional areas between sea and land are inherently vulnerable to risk of flooding and erosion. Thus hard struct...

Developing the Conceptual and Methodological Framework for Discursive-institutional Analysis of Coastal Exclusive Space Production: with Special Reference to Critical Realism Perspective

Because of the limited capacity of coastal lands and conflicting interests among stakeholders for coastal resources, there are intensifying pressures to retain and provide more public access to the coast. Coastal gated communities have been developed increasingly in the middle shoreline of Caspian Sea in North of Iran. They are kind of exclusive space production as they restrict public access t...

CFD SIMULATION OF FLOW OVER CONTRACTED COMPOUND ARCHED RECTANGULAR SHARP CRESTED WEIRS

Measurement of discharge in open channels is one of the main concerns in hydraulic engineering. The structures used for this aim should be accurate, economical and easy to use. Weirs are among the oldest and most convenient hydraulic structures that have been used in both laboratory and field for flow measurement in open channels. Due to limitations of simple sharp crested weirs, recently compo...
